How to remove advertising programs on Windows computers

Pop-Up Ads, or pop-up ads, also known as follow-up ads, often appear on websites that Internet users visit. Pop-Up Ads often take the form of short-form ads, a promotion, or announcements that link to other websites.

Pop-Up Ads (pop up ads) are automatically created by Adware or other supporting software (collectively called adware), allowing advertisements to be displayed on computers, the purpose is to earn profit from advertisers.

Technically, Adware (adware) is not a virus but is classified as a malware program (Potentially Unwanted Programs – PUP), which will most likely contain and activating malicious programs on your computer, such as adware, toolbars or viruses.

Adware may be installed without notice or user permission. This is because Adware is often “packaged” inside other free software that users download and install from unknown sites.

Therefore, when installing any program on your computer, you need to pay attention:

  • On the installation screen, do not click the “Next” button too quickly.
  • Read carefully and accept the terms carefully.
  • Always select the “Custom” setting.
  • Reject installations that require additional software that you do not want to install.
  • Uncheck any options that say the homepage and search settings will be changed.

Remove ads and adware on computers

Step 1: Uninstall Adware on the Control Panel

To do this: Open Control Panel on the computer.

  • On Windows 10/7 / Vista: Go to Start> Control Panel.
  • On Windows XP: Go to Start> Settings> Control Panel.
  • On Windows 8, hover your mouse in the upper right corner, enter Control Panel in the search bar, and click the appropriate result.

In the Control Panel window, find and double-click the following:

  • For Windows 10/8/7 / Vista: Start> Control Panel > Programs and Features
  • For Windows XP: Start> Settings> Control Panel > Programs and Features

At this time, the screen displays the list of programs installed on the system. Here you click Install On to sort the installed programs by date, then find and uninstall programs of unknown origin, suspicious, or you do not realize what it is. Try going to Google, enter the name of the software to find out, if it is not on the list of software you actively install, click on it and select Uninstall.

Step 2: Clean Adware Toolbar and Unwanted Toolbar in the browser

AdwCleaner is a free tool that helps remove adware, unwanted programs (PUP), Toolbar and browser hijacker (Hijacker) on your computer easily.

1. Download AdwCleaner to your computer and install it.

2. Close all open programs on your computer, then double click to open AdwCleaner.

3. After accepting the terms, click the Scan button.

4. Wait until the scan finishes, click Quarantine to remove all unwanted malware on your system.

5. An alert informs you that all running processes will be closed and you need to save these programs before AdwCleaner removes malware from your computer. Click Continue.

6. Wait for AdwCleaner to clean.

7. When the process finishes, you will be notified that you need to restart the computer immediately, click to restart.

8. When your computer has rebooted, close the AdwCleaner information window and follow the next steps.

Step 3: Remove unwanted programs with Junkware Removal Tool

1. Download the Junkware Removal Tool and run it.

2. Press any key to start the process of scanning your computer with the JRT tool – Junkware Removal Tool.

Note that Junkware Removal Tool will automatically close all programs you are using without notice, remember to save before launching this tool.

3. Wait until JRT – Junkware Removal Tool scans and “cleans” your system.

4. Close the JRT window and then restart your computer.

Step 4: Remove Ads and Adware extensions from IE, Google Chrome and Firefox

On Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer, click the gear icon in the top right corner of the browser window.

2. Select Internet Options in the drop-down menu.

3. The Internet Options dialog box of IE will be displayed, move to the Advanced tab.

Find and click the Reset button …

4. Check Delete personal settings and then click Reset.

5. After the reset process completes, click Close and then OK to exit the Internet Explorer options window.

6. Close all windows and restart Internet Explorer.

Google Chrome browser:

1. Open your Chrome browser, click the vertical 3-dot icon in the top right corner of the screen and access Settings

2. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings window, click on Advanced to display the Advanced settings.

3. Next scroll down to the bottom of the screen, find and select the Reset and clean options → Restore settings to their original defaults.

4. Click Reset settings options to return Chrome browser to its original state.

5. Restart your Chrome browser.

Mozila Firefox browser:

1. Open Firefox, type the following into the address bar and press Enter:

Or go to the Settings menu and select Help> Troubleshooting Information.

2. Next on the Troubleshooting Information window, click the Refresh Firefox button on the right and confirm the refresh message to reset Firefox to its default state.

3. After the reset process has finished, restart your Firefox browser and you’re done.

Step 5: Clean up the remaining malicious files on the computer

1. Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium to your computer and install it.

2. Scan and clean your computer with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

  • a. Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and allow the program to update (update) the latest version (if necessary).
  • b. After the update process has finished, click the Scan Now button to start the scan of your system, removing malware and unwanted programs.
  • c. Wait until the system scan is finished.
  • d. Click the Quarantine All button to remove all threats found on your system.
  • e. After the process finishes, proceed to restart your computer to complete the process.
  • f. After the computer has finished booting, run Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware again to confirm there are no more “threats” on your system.

Step 6: Clean up unwanted files and entries on the system

Use the CCleaner program and follow the steps to clean the system from temporary Internet files and registry error entries.
