Windows 10 will collect a user’s location to provide relevant information such as local weather, and some other information. However, if you feel uncomfortable or do not want Windows 10 to track your location, you can completely turn off location tracking on Windows 10.
Ways to turn off location services on Windows 10 through Action Center
To turn off location on Windows 10 quickly, use the Location button located on the Action Center of the Taskbar. The steps are as follows:
Step 1: Launch the Action Center by clicking the icon located in the far right corner of the Taskbar (usually the bottom right of your screen).
Or you can use Windows + I key combination.
Step 2: In Action Center interface, locate the Location button and click to enable or disable the feature. If Location is on and the word ON is on, if it is dark it will be off.
Method 1. Turn off location tracking using Windows Settings
Step 1: Open the Windows Settings window interface by clicking Start menu and then clicking on the cog icon.
Or you can use Windows + I key combination.
Step 2: In the Windows Settings interface, continue to click Privacy to set the changes.
Step 3: Under Privacy section, scroll down to App permissions, click on Location (location) from the left window.
a. Turn off location tracking on the device in use
This will turn off location tracking for all accounts on the device you are using.
Note: The user you use must be an Administrator to follow the solution.
Step 4: Continue with the Location interface in Privacy Settings, in the section Allow access to location on this device, follow the Location for this device is on and click the Change button.
Step 5: Finally, turn Location to OFF to turn off location tracking on your Windows 10 computer.
b. Turn off location services for each user account and specific apps on Windows 10
To turn off location tracking for a User account on Windows 10, first you need to log in to the user you want to turn off location, perform the Privacy steps as above and follow the steps below:
Step 4: Continue with the Location interface in Privacy Settings, in the section Allow apps to access your location, change the status to OFF to turn off location tracking for your account.
Step 5: Scroll down, you will see a list of apps that can make you tracked the location when used, turn on / off according to your needs by changing the slider status to the right of the app name to ON / OFF.
Method 2: Turn off location on the computer using Registry Editor
Alternatively, you can edit the Registry value to turn off location on Windows 10.
Note:
- The user you use must be an Administrator to modify the Registry.
- Back up the Registry before making any modifications.
- This method only works on Windows 10 older versions. The latest updates temporarily you can not adjust on / off Location by Registry.
a. How to turn off the location on the computer in use
Step 1: Press the Windows + R key combination to open the Run command window.
Step 2: Enter the following command and press Enter:
regedit
Step 3: The Registry Editor interface appears, navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ lfsvc \ Service \ Configuration
Step 4: In Configuration, navigate to DWORD named Status in the right pane and double click.
Step 5: In the window that appears, you will see the value in the Value Data frame is 1, change it to 0 and then click OK. No need to reset the computer.
Note: Value 1 is turned on Location, value 0 is off Location.
b. Turn off location for apps and each user account
To turn off location tracking for a Windows 10 User account using Registry Editor, you need to log in to the user you want to turn off location.
Steps 1, 2: Do the same as above.
Step 3: The Registry Editor interface appears, navigate to the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ DeviceAccess \ Global \ {BFA794E4-F964-4FDB-90F6-51056BFE4B44}
Step 4: In {BFA794E4-F964-4FDB-90F6-51056BFE4B44}
, you find the String value named Value in the right pane and double click.
Step 5: In the window that appears, enter the corresponding value you need in the Value Data box:
To turn off position, enter Deny.
To position objects, enter Allow.
Step 6: After changing the String value as above, you navigate to the following to edit DWORD:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Sensor \ Permissions \ {BFA794E4-F964-4FDB-90F6-51056BFE4B44}
Step 7: In {BFA794E4-F964-4FDB-90F6-51056BFE4B44}
, navigate to DWORD named SensorPermissionState in the right pane and double click.
Step 8: In the window that appears, you will change the value corresponding to turning on / off the location feature:
The value of 1 is on Location.
The value of 0 is off Location.
