CES 2020: Qualcomm Announces Higher Quality Voice Calls With aptX Voice Bluetooth Audio Codec

Though smartphones are used for a lot of things, the prime motive of any phone will always be to, well, make and receive phone calls. Smartphones have been continuously improving in terms of the cameras they feature, the battery life, storage space, gaming, and whatnot. While all of these things are essential, they are merely add-ons to the actual intent, and the smartphone manufacturers know that very well. This gets solidified when we see all the companies trying their best to improve the voice quality on their smartphones through better hardware with each passing generation. Although the voice clarity and quality partly depend upon the cellular network, the current trend of making voice calls via Bluetooth accessories also makes up for the loss in quality, as the quality is simply not there yet. Qualcomm has tried to solve this issue with its latest aptX voice codec technology unveiled during the ongoing CES 2020. Let’s have a look at what the Qualcomm aptX voice codec has in store for us.

Qualcomm Announces aptX Voice Bluetooth Audio Codec which Intends to Provide for Higher Quality Voice Calls

As said, Qualcomm aptX Voice audio is a new feature of the Qualcomm aptX Adaptive audio technology that provides HD voice quality over Bluetooth wireless connections. The aptX Voice delivers 32KHz voice quality with a flat 16KHz response, which ensures HD voice quality with calls made using Bluetooth accessories. As per Qualcomm, “narrowband and wideband codecs used within the Bluetooth Handsfree Profile can sometimes result in indistinguishable voices, muddled words, the inability to distinguish from background noise and ultimately listener fatigue.”

Furthermore, Qualcomm says that the new aptX Voice will make deciphering words easier and specific. For instance, the words that have similar sounds (‘s’ and ‘f’ sounds, for example, are too difficult to distinguish if the call quality is not up to the mark). Adding to it, it allows for better understanding if a person is on a speaker or at a place where there is too much noise. Alongside that, with the latest aptX Voice, it will be easier for the receiver to understand faint talkers, people with an accent, and distinguish between multiple voices speaking at the same time.

The Qualcomm aptX Voice technology is currently available on the recently unveiled Snapdragon 765G and Snapdragon 865 platforms, and it makes sense that the upcoming generation of Bluetooth audio accessories might utilise the same. “aptX technology revolutionised the Bluetooth stereo listening experience by bringing unprecedented wireless audio quality, and aptX Voice is set to do the same for voice calls. As consumers increasingly use wireless headsets and earbuds for making and receiving calls, aptX Voice is the answer to ensuring higher clarity and quality of call experience.” says Jams Chapman, Vice President, and General Manager, Voice, Music and Wearables, Qualcomm Technologies International.

As of now, this is all we know about the technology, and we will have to wait to find out which company adapts it first of all. What are your thoughts on the latest Qualcomm aptX Voice codec? Do let us know in the comments section below.
